modular overlay not working well#381

D

Until a few days ago modular overlay worked 100%

Now, when you click to purchase it takes the customer to:
https://app.gumroad.com/checkout
And not leaving them in my domain…

1 This is bad for the experience of the customer who enters my site

2 It’s confusing

3 It is difficult to go back to the shop on the site

4 It was working fine before and suddenly it changed

5 asks to return it as it was before

It is only harmful and in no way helpful

Waiting for the answer and correction of the problem

I can only second this. The previous overlay checkout experience was 100% fit for my use case of selling a single Membership product via my own website.

The user landed on my page, pressed the Subscribe button, and they were immediately shown an overlay where they just input their card details (?wanted=true). They clicked the Pay button, and remained on my page. As soon as the JavaScript callback was executed, I redirected the user to my own Thank You page, and the transaction was complete. The user never left my own webpage.

Now instead, when the user clicks on the Subscribe button they are taken to Gumroad’s checkout page (overlay is no longer working with ?wanted=true), where it shows that they have 1 item in their cart. For my use case a cart doesn’t make any sense, as I only have a single membership product to sell. If they want to go back to my page, they have to click on “Continue shopping”, which again, doesn’t make any sense, as there are no more products to buy on my page. If they click the Remove button to remove the “product” from their cart, they are shown images that say “Courses”, “E-books”, “Widgets” and “Templates” (I don’t sell any of these), with an additional call to action button to visit Gumroad Discover. A user seeing this would be super confused, not understanding how they ended up seeing Courses and E-books when they only came to pay for a membership. Besides, there is now also a basket icon showing up on the top right corner of my page, which again, is just confusing and not asked for.

This breaking change doesn’t seem to have been announced, nor any time was given to creators to cater for it on their website, the functionality just broke from one day to another.

In case you are deciding not to give the option to restore the previous overlay checkout experience, please at least allow for much greater customisation of the checkout page, and also, please don’t show any Gumroad ads (Discover) when there are no items in the cart.

Thank you

There is another thing I have just noticed.

If I go to a website that uses Gumroad and add their product to my cart, then head over to my website and add my product to my cart, the Gumroad checkout page will show two products being in my cart: the one from the other creator, and mine. While the chances of this happening to my customers is pretty slim, still, it now feels like that I am just a product in Gumroad’s basket, as opposed to me transparently using Gumroad as my payment platform.

It’s that simple
If it is supposed to be - overlay
Please make sure it is back to functioning 100% as it was before!

If you want to transfer customers to the app.gumroad domain
It should not be in this case!
I’m interested in advertising my domain and getting customers to stay on it.

No need to reinvent “the wheel” now
Just put the overlay back so it works properly
without the need to leave the domain where the courses are embedded

I believe that everyone who works in this way
justifies this claim decisively.

You promise an overlay
Just keep your promise…

Website owners use it because they want the customers
will remain in the domain and will not move to another domain.

1 It is essential for SEO
2 Making a convenient purchase
3 Business branding
4 If you transfer a customer in the middle of a purchase
to another domain - it raises suspicion
5 Just restore what was before

I’m just checking a site for selling courses
In embedding mode on my website
Glad I came across these comments…

If it really doesn’t work in 100% embed mode
It really doesn’t fit.

What is the logic of sending surfers to another domain?
Return the overlay as it was before.

I have found another MAJOR defect with the new redirect checkout experience. The cart icon pops up on your webpage even when there are 0 items. When the customer clicks on the icon, they are taken to the Gumroad checkout page with an empty cart. The customer clicks “Continue shopping” and they are taken to Gumroad Discover homepage, not back to your webpage!

I’ve noticed this behaviour happens when the cart is empty. When the cart has an item, “Continue shopping” brings the customer back to your webpage. However, even this behaviour is somewhat broken. If your website has Gumroad integration on multiple pages, the “Continue shopping” brings the customer back to the first page through which they added an item, even if they were most recently on a different webpage where they clicked the cart icon.

Just allow to choose:

1 overlay 100% without leaving the domain

2 Who wants to move to your domain

There should be no problem to enable and do this.
I’m sure everyone will choose option 1

Listen to your customers…
Otherwise we all lose

Even if Gumroad has decided for a redirected checkout experience, can it please be applied to “checkout” flow only? Currently there’s a redirect for every “add to cart” action. For a multi-product page, that’s too many clicks and bounces for the customer, and they’ll likely give up soon.

At least “add to cart” behaviour can still be the same as previous overlay model with final “payment / checkout” behaviour being the redirect.

It only creates damage!
Just put it back so the client doesn’t go to your domain!

I am not supposed to promote other courses
I want to sell my courses

They just decided to change the overlay function
In a way that causes damage to anyone who uses it on their site!!!

They must understand that they must change it.

Has there been any response to this?

Yeah its outdated and the documentation is slim and difficult to follow.

The default button did not play nice with my site so I had to make a custom button which is actually very easy with the script running on a page (simply link to a product - no mention of this in the docs). But with the script running, it places the cart button over my sites navigation (be great to set a position outselves like top left, bottom right etc) and theres no way to change any colour schemes (the default pink aint gonna work with many designs), it doesn’t even follow my profiles scheme.

I dont think it would take much to get this up to scratch and it really is quite essential.
